Myxobolus sp.
Myxobolus sp.
Unknown. Potential mixed infection since no organisms were detected in the liver.
Hepatocellular necrosis associated with the presence of numerous syncitia which appear to be formed by the fusion of hepatocytes. Syncitia (or giant cells) contain numerous nuclei (up to 20) and are characterised by a granular eosinophilic cytoplasm. Several contain conspicuous vacuoles containing membranous debris. Some hepatocytes exhibit nuclear hypertrophy with generally hyperchromic staining. Kidney: Mild to moderate haemorrhagic change. Little evidence of cellular necrosis. Myxosporean parasites in collecting ducts. Spleen: Several examples of nuclear crowding which may represent syncitium formation. Gills: Proximal region of primary lamellae with marked epithelial necrosis. Fusion of secondary lamellae associated with hyperplastic change. Occasional myxoboloid cysts present (not significant). Distal region of primary lamellae with similar changes but with less pronounced necrosis. Heart: Focal necrosis and inflammatory changes with rare syncitium formation.
