(RTLA evaluation of slide) The tumour envelopes the intestine and part of the liver. The tumour has two basic overlapping patterns. One consists of solid irregular islands of uniform cells having a basophilic nucleus, a fairly inconspicuous cytoplasm and a delicate nucleolus. The intervening fibrous stroma is moderately heavy. The other pattern consists of the same cell type of cells in a long trabeculae and intervening stroma are in parallel rows or swirls. Mitotic figures are abundant. The tumour is invading the muscularis of the intestine and small metasteses are scattered in the liver. These features are consistent with a carcinoid neoplasm but this should be confirmed with procedures for identifying argentaffin granules.
