Multiple branching organoid masses originating from the gill filaments and pseudobranch filaments consist of poorly formed gill tissues in a fibrous stroma. These tissues include nests of basophilic blast cells, irregular islands of cartilage and structures that resemble gill lamellae. Mitotic figures are present in some of the basophilic cells. The masses look benign histologically and there is no evidence that the adjacent tissues are being invaded. The kidney is extensively infiltrated by histocytes and other inflammatory cells. Renal tubules and glomeruli are being destroyed and those that remain are widely seperated by the reactive elements.
