David Walker
Senior Scientist - Environmental Virology
Dr David Walker has several years of experience in food safety, specialising in microbiology and virology. He has worked on sanitary surveys, investigating the sources of faecal contamination to bivalve shellfish harvesting areas to aid monitoring and classification. He also has several years’ experience in the laboratory, developing and establishing new methods for quantification of enteric pathogens, faecal indicators, and respiratory pathogens in shellfish. David also leads the reference laboratory for detecting SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater. In this role, he focusses on quality assurance for the laboratories providing monitoring data. This has involved the development of a programme of interlaboratory ring trials to compare data obtained by laboratories across the UK, provision of high-level and detailed technical advice to government and academic partners and development of a generic protocol for quantifying SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater.
