Dr Ioanna Katsiadaki

Fish Physiologist/Endocrinologist

Ioanna’s recent research has focused on the evaluation of omics as an approach to better understand chemical toxicity, animal physiology/welfare and food safety, ultimately improving the scientific basis underpinning regulatory decisions on chemical hazard assessment.

Ioanna is a principal Fish Physiologist/Endocrinologist and the Science Leader for The Cefas Weymouth Laboratory. She graduated from the Veterinary School (Aristotelian University, Thessaloniki, Greece) in 1992 and a year later she moved to the UK to continue her studies on receipt of a national scholarship.  Ioanna completed an MSc (Fish Technology) and a PhD (Biochemistry of fish reproductive physiology) before joining Cefas in 1998 to develop an androgen biomarker in fish.

Ioanna has over 25 years of experience in conducting research in the area of chemical hazard characterisation and test method development. She is also providing information and advice related to the effects of contaminants on aquatic organisms to government departments (Defra and the EA) as well as international organisations like OECD, ECHA and SETAC.

Ioanna is a UK representative in the Fish Expert Group that advises the OECD Validation Management Group in Ecotoxicology (VMG-Eco) since 2004, one of the four core theme leaders of the UK-Japan cooperation on endocrine disrupting chemicals since 2001 and the co-coordinator of the JPI Knowledge hub on the integrated assessment of chemical contaminants and their effects on the marine environment.

Her professional memberships include the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, The Royal Society of Medicine, the European Society of Comparative Endocrinology and the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC).
