Dr Mark Kirby
Science Services Director
Mark Kirby entered the role of Science Services Director in 2017 with responsibility for the overall delivery and development of Cefas’ key scientific facilities including laboratories, aquaria, workshops, stores and the research vessel.
He has been at Cefas (and its predecessor) for over 30 years with a scientific background in ecotoxicology and over 30 peer reviewed scientific publications. During his time at Cefas Mark has occupied a number of scientific and managerial roles including programme management and business development.
Mark is a nationally and internationally recognised expert in the field of emergency response (e.g. oil spills) and their marine impacts and is a key advisor to UK government in the field. He also chairs the Premiam steering group overseeing a UK wide initiative to promote best practice in science and management of post-spill environmental monitoring. The role of Science Services Director allows Mark to promote his firm belief that one of Cefas primary strengths is its capacity to deliver excellent science through high quality, safe and efficient science facilities and equipment.
