Setting the standards for post spill marine monitoring preparedness assessment!
21 March 2014
Building on the work conducted through the Premiam initiative Cefas have just had a paper published in the Marine Pollution Bulletin. Entitled 'The Principles of effective post-spill environmental monitoring in marine environments and their application to preparedness assessment' the paper details 8 principles of effective post-spill monitoring programmes and introduces an assessment tool, using the principles, that organisations can use to assess and develop their monitoring strategy.
Mark Kirby, the Premiam chairperson and primary author of the paper, commented, "The assessment tools introduced in this paper have developed as a result of lessons learnt through the Premiam initiative and it is satisfying to see further practical outputs with wide relevance emerging."
The aim is that organisations with responsibilities for post spill monitoring and other stakeholders will be able to use the preparedness assessment in their own audit and review processes to bring about genuine improvements in the ability of authorities to respond to spills in a prompt and effective manner.
