Dr Sílvia Rodríguez Climent
Ecosystems/Acoustic Scientist
Sílvia took her degree on biology specializing on organisms and systems at the University of Barcelona. During her Erasmus laboratory training at the Universiteit of Leiden (The Netherlands), she discovered she wanted to do research. Then, she decided to do a specialization in Ecology with her master, and later a PhD focusing on the impact of human activities on the ichthyofauna in the Ebro Delta (Catalunya, Spain).
Next, she worked for four years at the Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera (IPMA, Portugal). In years 2013-2015 she did work in a project towards the development of a more sustainable management for the purse seiner’s sector regarding the sardine resource. Purse seiners were equipped with a portable echosounder for the acquisition of acoustic data to later estimate the abundance of sardine. Sílvia learned the acoustic techniques and procedures in this project, although she did have some previous experience as acoustic assistant in the annual sampling surveys carried out by the same research institute. From march to november 2016 she was involved in a postdoctoral project studying the catchability and selectivity of trawls used to fish deep-water rose shrimp. That same year, she was invited to teach at the Instituto Politécnico de Setúbal, where she taught Marine Biology for a semester.
Since august 2017 she is working in the Centre for the Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture (CEFAS) as an Ecosystem researcher. Her role includes applications of acoustic technologies to fisheries ecology and fisheries assessment as well as being a principal investigator in a couple of projects. One coordinating the small pelagic self-sampling programme in the South West Coast of England, and another managing the use of Artificial intelligence (AI) systems to improve data collection for crustacean stock assessments in the area. She is always keen to learn new techniques and procedures.
Silvia's research interests include: Fisheries acoustics; pelagic fisheries; research surveys; ecosystems impact (human/natural); small scale fisheries; sustainable management and use of marine resources; artificial intelligence (AI); stock assessment; fisheries modelling; code programming (R); peer-review research publications.
